Candle Care Guide: Elevate Your Experience with New Pastures Home
At New Pastures Home, our candles are crafted to bring warmth and serenity into your home. Here’s how to ensure they remain in pristine condition and provide a pure, long-lasting experience:
General Candle Care - Burning Your Candle
Placement: Light your candle in a well-ventilated space, keeping it away from drafts and fans. This helps prevent sooting and ensures an even burn.
Burn Time: For the best results, let your candle burn for two to four hours on the first burn, or until the melt pool has reached the edge of the glass. Avoid burning for less, as this can cause tunnelling, and burning for more than four hours, which can cause the wick to slant and soot. From the second burn onward, you can burn for one to three hours at a time for optimum performance.
Tip - the longer you allow your candle to burn, the quicker it will burn and use up the wax. Burn your candle in shorter stints, allowing the wax to fully reset between each burn, to prolong the burn time of your candle.
Safety First: Discontinue use when only 5mm of wax remains. Always keep an eye on your candle when the wax is low to prevent overheating of the glass vessel.
Wick Care
Clean Wax Pool: Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings and matches, as debris can cause the candle to burn faster.
Wick Maintenance: After extinguishing the flame, centre and straighten the wick if necessary. A crooked wick can lead to uneven burning and potential vessel cracking. (We use bespoke, made-to-order, thickened & heat proof jars to avoid this, but taking precautionary measures is always encouraged.
Trimming: Regularly trim the wick to 5mm once the wax has set. This prevents high flames and sooting. With our wicks, this can be gently crumbled between your fingertips, with the debris being put in the bin. You may never need to use traditional cotton wick trimmers for this reason.
Storing Your Candle
Optimal Conditions: Store your candle in a cool, dry place and cover it to protect the wax from dust. Dust can dull the scent and affect burning. Our deluxe candles come with a metal lid for this purpose, where our classic candles come in a drawstring cotton bag to protect from dust and sunlight.
Condensation: If condensation appears, wipe it away with a paper towel before lighting. Use your candle in a reasonable timeframe to enjoy its full fragrance. Our candles have been tested in storage for up to 12 months whilst maintaining full fragrance.
Crystal Candle Care
Our crystal candles combine beauty and energy with their magical crystal adornments. Here’s how to care for them:
Crystal Options: You may remove the crystals before lighting or leave them on top for a unique look. If you choose the latter, wash the crystals with warm water once your have completed burning your candle for the last time, and the wax has cooled to keep them as keepsakes. Our wax is pure soy, so easily cleansed with warm water.
Wooden Wicks: Our candles feature wooden wicks from reclaimed fallen trees, offering a gentle, natural crackling sound. We do not add anything artificial to our wicks to make an excessive crackling sound. What you hear is totally natural. Follow the general wick care guidelines to maintain their quality and performance.
Did You Know?
"Pull away" or "wet spots" is a term used to describe what looks like air bubbles in glass-vessel candles. After the hot wax has been poured into a vessel and cools down, it will slightly shrink, which can cause the wax to pull away very slightly from the vessel wall. This gap is no larger than a hair, but the glass can act as a magnifier, creating the illusion of an air bubble. Following cooling, the vessel's heat is applied to the top of each candle to create an impeccably smooth surface and minimise some of the pull away. However, there's no need to worry about this, as once you light your candle and it warms back up, these bubbles will start to disappear and will not affect your candle’s diffusion and lifespan.
